With 3 ingredients and 3 minutes, this classic cocktail is worth the hype.

Aperol spritz

Bubbly, citrusy, herbal, subtly bitter and lightly sweet, the Aperol Spritz is the most classic bubbly mixed drink of them all. When that glowing sunset-orange that catches late-afternoon light, it literally looks like it belongs on a postcard from a piazza somewhere.

This Italian cocktail has been capturing hearts and minds since the 1950’s. If you’re like me, you might have rolled your eyes to the popularity of this drink. But taste one made the right way: it’s absolutely worth the hype.

What Is an Aperol Spritz?

The Aperol spritz, or Spritz Veneziano, is a classic Italian aperitif: a cocktail meant to wake up the appetite before a meal. The spritz was originally invented in the 1800’s in Italy as a way to water down sparkling wine by mixing water.

The version we know today, with its signature orange glow, came together in the 1950s and is now recognized by the International Bartenders Association as one of the IBA official cocktails,, with a specific 3-2-1 ratio:

  • 3 parts Prosecco (or other dry sparkling wine)
  • 2 parts Aperol
  • 1 part soda water
Aperol spritz

Tips for the Perfect Aperol Spritz

The Aperol spritz is so easy to make: there’s no real technique involved at all! Just stir ingredients and top with bubbles. But this spritz has been criticized for being watery, too sweet, and like a Capri sun (thanks, New York Times). Here’s how to make the best Aperol spritz:

  • Use a mid-range, dry Prosecco. The key to a great spritz! Low quality Prosecco can make the drink too sugary. Grab a mid-price range bottle of Prosecco or champagne for this one with a dry flavor.
  • Make sure both the Aperol and Prosecco are chilled. To minimize dilution, have both of the alcohols chilled as much as possible.
  • Squeeze in the orange. Bring more tangy citrus notes by squeezing in the orange wedge to the drink, then adding it as a garnish.
  • Use plenty of ice. Keep that beverage ice cold! Try clear ice for the most stunning look.
  • Use a straw. It’s subtle, but drinking out of a straw keeps your hand from warming the glass. Less dilution, better drink!

What Exactly Is Aperol?

Aperol is an Italian bitter (amaro) that’s bright orange a bittersweet flavor. The first aperitif invented back in the 1860’s in Italy was Campari, the main ingredient in a Negroni. Many sprung up after that, with each restaurant making its own unique aperitif. Aperol was invited in 1919, and it was bought by the Campari company in the 1990’s.

Its flavor is lightly sweet, bitter, and balanced, with notes of herbs and citrus. It has a fairly low alcohol content (22 proof or 11% ABV). Its light flavor is much more approachable than the very bitter Campari.

Other ways to use Aperol once you have a bottle open: try the unique modern classics Paper Plane and Naked and Famous, or my sweet tart Aperol Cocktail.

When to Serve an Aperol Spritz

The Aperol Spritz is built for warm weather and the hour before dinner! Here are a few great ways to serve it:

  • As a summer porch drink at golden hour
  • As an aperitivo before an Italian dinner – pair it with my Margherita pizza
  • For outdoor parties or bridal showers where a pretty, low-ABV option is welcome
  • As an alternative to a mimosa for holiday mornings

If You Find It Too Sweet, Try These Drinks

To me, the Aperol Spritz is pretty sweet: here are a few drinks I like even more:

  • Negroni Sbagliato: A spin on the Negroni using Prosecco instead of gin, it’s similar to the Aperol Spritz but I think it’s better!
  • St Germain Spritz or Hugo: This floral, refreshing drink is easy drinking: perfect for summer!
  • Limoncello Spritz: This sparkling drink has a pure lemon flavor and is a little more balanced.
  • Campari Spritz: Bitter and bubbly, it’s a common spin on the Aperol spritz.
  • Amaro Spritz: This bubbly drink has notes of caramel and cola, and learns more bitter.
  • Americano: The Americano is another bubbly cocktail using Campari, sweet vermouth, and lots of soda water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Aperol Spritz strong?

Not in terms of alcohol level! A spritz is around 8–10% ABV: it’s about the same as a glass of wine, and lighter than most cocktails. Some people may find the flavor strong (it can taste pretty sweet).

Can I make it without Prosecco?

Any dry sparkling wine works — cava, dry Champagne, or a domestic sparkling. Avoid sweet sparkling wines like moscato d’Asti, which will tip the drink overly sugary.

What’s the difference between Aperol and Campari?

Aperol is lower in alcohol (11% vs Campari’s 24%), lighter and sweeter, and more approachable. Campari is very bitter and herbaceous. See my guide to Campari vs Aperol.

Can I make a pitcher for a crowd?

Yes. Multiply the 3-2-1 ratio, combine the Aperol and chilled Prosecco in a pitcher just before serving, and let guests add their own soda water and ice.

12 Essential Tropical Drinks https://www.acouplecooks.com/tropical-drinks/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/tropical-drinks/#comments Tue, 05 May 2026 14:06:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=106716 The best tropical drinks bring vacation home with flavors like rum, pineapple, coconut, and lime. Here are my favorite tropical cocktail recipes worth shaking up today!

Malibu Bay Breeze

Looking for drinks with a tropical vibe? Here’s a full lexicon of classic tropical drinks that use fruity flavors to build deliciously beachy cocktails! There’s 1940’s and 50’s icons like the Pina Colada and Mai Tai, or try the Brazilian national drink sensation, the Caipirinha.

There’s no strict definition of what makes a tropical cocktail, but what I’ve learned after years of testing cocktails is they often feature flavors like pineapple, orange, coconut, and passionfruit, and the majority are tropical rum drinks. Here’s my list of top tropical drinks I’d put in front of anyone, anywhere!

A Quick Guide to Rum for Tropical Drinks

When it comes to tropical cocktails, the overwhelming majority are tropical rum drinks! When it comes to stocking this spirit, there are several different types of rum that all have different flavors. They might seem interchangeable, but they’re each unique! You’ll need 4 main types of rum for tropical drinks:

  • White rum: The classic! White rum has a straightforward flavor rum with the signature fruity finish.
  • Aged rum: Also known as golden rum or añejo rum. Aging gives it notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus, or caramel.
  • Dark rum: Also aged, it has a deep, caramel flavor and sometimes notes of cinnamon and spices (see Dark Rum Cocktails)
  • Coconut rum: Malibu is the most common: a sweet coconut-flavored liqueur made with Caribbean rum.

Pro Tip: Use Cream of Coconut, Not Coconut Milk

The one big mistake home bartenders make with tropical drinks is grabbing the wrong coconut product. Cream of coconut (Coco López is the classic) is sweetened and thick. Coconut milk is unsweetened and thinner.

Swap one for the other and you’ll either end up with a watery, savory cocktail or an overpoweringly sweet one. For piña coladas, painkillers, and coconut margaritas, you want cream of coconut every time.

More Cocktail Recipes

There are so many cocktails to try outside of these beach drinks! Here are 300+ cocktail recipes for every occasion:

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most popular tropical drink?

The Piña Colada is the favorite: it became the national drink of Puerto Rico in 1978. The Mojito and Mai Tai are close 2nd and 3rd.

Can I make tropical drinks non-alcoholic?

Yes! My Virgin Piña Colada and Virgin Mojito are delicious zero-proof versions. Most tropical cocktails are easy to adapt by skipping the spirit and adding a splash of soda or a flavored syrup.

What’s the difference between a tropical cocktail and a tiki drink?

There’s some overlap, but “tiki” is a specific mid-century American aesthetic (think Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic’s) that often uses multiple rums and complex syrups like orgeat. All tiki drinks are tropical; not all tropical drinks are tiki.

Mojito Pitcher Recipe https://www.acouplecooks.com/mojito-pitcher-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/mojito-pitcher-recipe/#comments Mon, 04 May 2026 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=100090 Make drinks for a crowd with my easy mojito pitcher recipe! Mojito pitcher recipe

The minty mojito is one of my favorite classic cocktails of all time. But have you ever tried to make more than two mojitos, one after another? It takes far too long to make them to order.

So enter: my very favorite mojito pitcher recipe! I made this big batch cocktail for an outdoor dinner, and it’s so much more fun with this party drink in your hand. It’s minty, tangy, bubbly, and every time I drink one I feel that carefree feeling like the last day of school before summer vacation!

Mojito Pitcher Ingredients

The Classic Mojito was invented in Havana, Cuba, though the exact origin is unknown. Some say it goes all the way back to the 1500’s with an early combination of lime, sugar and rum. The modern version of it gained steam in the 1930’s, when writer Ernest Hemingway helped to popularize it.

The Mojito is usually as a single drink, not a pitcher. My pitcher version uses a homemade mint simple syrup, which is a little different from the standard method. You’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Fresh mint leaves: Pack them loosely into a measuring cup. (Also here’s how to store fresh mint so it stays the freshest.)
  • Granulated sugar and water: The base of a simple 1:1 syrup.
  • Fresh lime juice: Always use fresh juice: never bottled! The flavor difference is huge.
  • White rum: A white rum is traditional.
  • Soda water or club soda: Stirred in at the last minute to keep everything bubbly!
Mojito pitcher recipe

The Key Move: A Quick Mint Simple Syrup

The standard mojito is made in a cocktail shaker: first you muddle mint, then add simple syrup, lime juice and rum. But for a pitcher version, you don’t want to have to muddle such a large quantity of the herb. That’s where the mint syrup comes in! Make a quick mint simple syrup, and it infuses minty fresh flavor into each drink. It’s similar to this mint simple syrup, but even quicker. Here are the main steps:

  • Place mint leaves in a pan with equal parts sugar and water.
  • Bring to a simmer until the sugar is dissolved, then allow to sit at least 5 minutes. Then strain it into a large pitcher.

Otherwise, this mojito pitcher recipe is beyond simple. Mix the syrup with lime juice and rum, then add ice and garnishes to the pitcher. Serve topped off with soda water! Speaking of…

Mojito

Soda Water vs. Club Soda: Does It Matter?

Speaking of soda water, is it club soda? Is it seltzer? In this mojito pitcher recipe, I use the term “soda water” to mean any type of unflavored sparkling water:

  • Soda water aka seltzer is carbonated water with no additives — straight up bubbles!
  • Club soda is carbonated water infused with added minerals, which give it a salty, lightly sweet flavor. It’s great in cocktails, like these top club soda cocktails.

What about tonic water? Tonic water is is carbonated water with added quinine and sugar. Don’t use it in a Mojito because of the distinct flavor. But you can use it for a Gin and TonicVodka TonicTequila Tonic or Whiskey Tonic!

Oatmeal Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/oatmeal-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/oatmeal-smoothie/#comments Sun, 03 May 2026 14:18:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=87491 This creamy oatmeal smoothie recipe tastes just like a cozy cinnamon bowl of oats, but in a glass! Blend it with banana, peanut butter, and rolled oats for a 5-minute breakfast.

Oatmeal smoothie

Oatmeal is on my table almost every single day, usually as a big bowl or oatmeal bars. But I’ve come up with another favorite way to eat this whole grain: in a oatmeal smoothie! Blend up oats with banana and peanut butter and it tastes just like a bowl of oatmeal.

The puree is scented with cozy cinnamon and ultra creamy. Packed with protein, it’s the ideal breakfast or healthy snack. As a smoothie expert who’s written over 50 smoothie recipes, I can guarantee you will love this one!

Why You’ll Love This Oatmeal Smoothie

  • Tastes like a peanut butter oatmeal in drinkable form: all the cinnamon-and-PB comfort of a classic oatmeal recipe, but with a straw!
  • Loaded with whole grains and protein: It’s made with rolled oats, Greek yogurt, and peanut butter together pack in fiber and staying power.
  • Five minutes, one blender: No soaking and no cooking needed.

Ingredients You’ll Need

You’ll need a handful of ingredients for this oatmeal smoothie, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll already have them on hand. Here’s what you need for this smoothie recipe:

  • Old Fashioned rolled oats: Use regular old Fashioned oats. Steel cut oats don’t work as a substitute; they’re the texture of rice so much too hard to blend.
  • Bananas: This recipe uses room temperature bananas to make it simple to whip up anytime. You can also use frozen bananas if you have them.
  • Frozen pineapple: This fruit has a neutral flavor that infuses just the right sweetness and icy texture. For a substitute, use 1 cup peeled apple (and use a frozen banana for texture).
  • Peanut butter: Nut butter adds creaminess and protein to an oatmeal smoothie; it’s also great with almond butter or cashew butter. For nut allergies, use sunflower butter
  • Greek yogurt: Adding yogurt packs in protein and makes a creamy texture for smoothies. For dairy-free, use more non-dairy milk.
  • Milk: Use dairy milk, or non-dairy milk of choice (oat milk is our favorite).
  • Vanilla, cinnamon and salt: These ingredients work in combination to make the flavor of a bowl of oatmeal.
  • Ice: Ice achieves just the right icy texture in smoothie recipes.

Flavor Variations and Add-Ins

Throw the ingredients into a blender and whiz them into a beautiful creamy oatmeal smoothie! Take one sip and it tastes remarkably like oatmeal. The cinnamon is key to the oatmeal vibe. Here are a few more tweaks to this banana oatmeal smoothie you can do to vary the flavor:

  • Increase the cinnamon. Use the high end of the cinnamon specified in the recipe below for a cozy Cinnamon Oatmeal Smoothie.
  • Use almond butter or cashew butter. Use any type of nut butter in place of the peanut butter, like almond butter, cashew butter, or pecan butter.
  • Add chai spices. Substitute cozy chai spices for the cinnamon to make a Chai Oatmeal Smoothie.
Banana oatmeal smoothie

How to Make It Vegan

This banana oatmeal smoothie has Greek yogurt to load on protein and healthy probiotics. But want a vegan smoothie? Try it with oat milk instead. Here’s what to do:

  • Use oat milk in place of both dairy milk and yogurt. An oatmeal smoothie needs oat milk, right? We love using this dairy free milk in smoothies: it’s very creamy and makes for a good body. It’s easy to find at your local grocery. Substitute the non-dairy milk for the dairy milk and half the quantity of yogurt, then add back more milk if necessary for blending.
  • Add back some protein. You’ll lose some protein from removing the yogurt. Consider adding up to 2 tablespoons chia seeds.

How to Store This Smoothie

This oatmeal smoothie is best right after you blend it up. But you can make smoothies in advance! Store them up to 1 day, refrigerated in a sealed container or a mason jar with the lid on. The smoothie may separate, which is perfectly natural. Just shake it up before enjoying.

Dietary Notes

This oatmeal smoothie recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. For vegan, plant-based, and dairy-free, follow the notes in the section above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen banana instead of room-temperature?

Yes, frozen banana makes the smoothie even creamier and frostier. If you do, cut the ice back to about 4 cubes so it doesn’t end up too thick to drink through a straw.

Can I make this oatmeal smoothie without yogurt?

Yes. Skip the yogurt and use ¾ cup of milk instead of ½ cup. The texture will be slightly looser but still creamy thanks to the oats, banana, and nut butter.

Can I make this smoothie ahead for meal prep?

Yes, blend it the night before and store it in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Shake well before drinking.

Make Fresh Limeade (Fasy & Easy!) https://www.acouplecooks.com/limeade/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/limeade/#comments Fri, 01 May 2026 21:37:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=76057 Here’s how to make fresh limeade with just limes and sugar for a bright, refreshing drink that’s better than any bottled version! Limeade

Want a way to beat the heat? Try my homemade limeade recipe. This refreshing lime drink has a tangy pop and is a perfect summer drink for parties, or for making a big pitcher to drink off of all week.

Homemade limeade from real limes is infinitely tastier than store-bought. You use less sugar to get even more real, sweet-tart flavor. The finish to the sip almost feels like you’re drinking a margarita, but it’s just limes, sugar, and water. A friend of mine brought some over recently, and it made my night!

5 Star Reader Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “So easy to make and such a great balance of citrus and sweet. I had a bunch of limes leftover from a party and still have enough to make another pitcher.” -Amy

Ingredients You Need

Limeade is a drink that’s made with limes, sugar, and water. It’s like lemonade, but made with limes! It’s popular in the United States, tropical countries like Guyana and Trinidad, and in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand. What you’ll find in many of those places is likely less sweet than the American version, though.

All you need are 2 ingredients for limeade, plus water:

  • Limes: To make a full pitcher of 8 servings, you need about 10 limes. There are 2 tablespoons of lime juice in the average lime, and you’ll need 20 tablespoons for the recipe. If you want to make limeade by the glass, I’ll have some tips in a bit.
  • Sugar: The best sugar to use here is plain old granulated sugar. This type of sugar makes for the best green limeade color. You can use other sugars like cane sugar or coconut sugar, but the color will be darker. If you prefer alternative sweeteners, try this limeade with honey or maple syrup.

How To Make Limeade (The Fast Way)

Many limeade recipes call for boiling a simple syrup on the stove. This is time-consuming and heats up the sugar. I decided to make my recipe even simpler. Here’s all you have to do for this limeade:

  • Juice the limes. This is the most time-consuming part of the process…by far! If I have one essential tip for you here, it’s to get a good juicer. Then you don’t have to do the rolling on the table trick, or break your fingers trying to squeeze as hard as you can.
  • Mix the sugar with 1 cup of warm water. All you have to do is mix sugar into warm water, and it dissolves. There’s no need to heat it on the stove.
  • Add the cold water and lime juice, and some ice. Cool it back down by adding the water, lime juice, and some ice. Limeade is served!
Limes and limade

Limeade By The Glass

This recipe makes 8 to 9 cups of limeade, which is actually quite a bit. If you want to make this lime drink by the glass, here’s what to do:

  • Squeeze 2.5 tablespoons lime juice into a glass. That’s 1 large lime or 2 small ones.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of warm water and stir until it dissolves.
  • Add 1 cup cold water and a handful of ice. Water it down more if necessary. Enjoy!

Variation: Cherry Limeade

The most famous spin on limeade is cherry limeade. These two fruits go hand-in-hand. The sweet and tart go perfectly together! You can use this limeade recipe and add cherry flavor using the juice from a jar or maraschino cherries for a fresh cherry limeade.

More Variations

The process of making lemonade is the same as this lime drink, but it uses lemons instead. You can also mix limeade or lemonade with booze for a fun cocktail idea! Here are some places to start:

  • Fresh Lemonade: Freshly squeezed lemons and sugar make an extraordinary sweet-tart flavor.
  • Bourbon Lemonade or Limeade: This is a perfect summer drink! Make fresh-squeezed lemonade or limeade and swirl in some whiskey for a spicy finish.
  • Spiked Lemonade or Limeade: Beat the heat with this fresh and boozy homemade lemonade, starring vodka and limoncello.

The Best Skinny Margarita https://www.acouplecooks.com/skinny-margarita/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/skinny-margarita/#respond Fri, 01 May 2026 21:10:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=59258 This skinny margarita recipe is only 100 calories and tastes just as good as the classic! It’s ready in 5 minutes with fresh lime, orange juice, and a touch of sweetener.

Skinny margarita

Want a margarita recipe with less calories? There’s a solution for that: the Skinny Margarita! Now that I’ve been drinking a lot more mocktails, I realized that this is my perfect drink: like a mashup of my virgin margarita and beloved classic margarita.

From the first sip of my first “Skinny”, I realized this drink is extraordinarily tasty and does not taste like you’re giving anything up. Using lots of lime, orange juice, and a little less tequila, it’s possible to make a margarita that tastes as good as the real thing (I think!). It’s now a part of my go-to margarita recipes.

What Is A Skinny Margarita?

A skinny margarita is a margarita designed to have less calories than the standard recipe. A classic margarita is a mix of tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau (orange liqueur). Here’s the key to removing calories from a cocktail: cut back on the alcohol! Here are the ingredients you’ll use for a Skinny Margarita recipe

  • Tequila blanco: Use a good one. The quality of your tequila matters more in a simple cocktail like this because there’s nowhere to hide. Check out our guide to the best tequila for margaritas if you’re not sure where to start.
  • Fresh lime juice: Always use fresh lime juice: especially in a margarita!
  • Fresh squeezed orange juice: This replaces the Cointreau and provides sweetness and citrusy notes.
  • Agave syrup or maple syrup: Just a touch rounds out the flavors.
Skinny margarita recipe

How to Make a Skinny Margarita

To mix up your own Skinny Margarita, there’s not much to it! Just mix the ingredients together, and serve it on the rocks (with ice). You don’t even need to use a cocktail shaker with this one, which makes it even easier. Here’s what to do:

  1. Rim the glass with salt. Salt enhances the sweet and sour flavors in the drink, and gives you that classic margarita flavor.
  2. Stir together in a mixing glass. Take that tequila, lime juice, and orange juice, and stir it together in a cocktail mixing glass or large glass of any kind.
  3. Strain into a glass and add ice. Strain the drink into a glass and add ice. You can use the classic margarita glass, but I like using a lowball glass like the one you see in the photos.

How Many Calories in a Skinny Margarita?

This recipe comes in at about 100 calories per serving, compared to around 170 calories in a classic margarita. That makes it a 40% reduction in calories, mostly from less liquor. If you’re keeping track of your drinks, this is one of the most satisfying swaps I’ve found. For more low-calorie options, I have a guide to my top 10 low calorie alcoholic drinks.

Top It With Margarita Salt

This Skinny Margarita is perfect with any kosher salt or flaky sea salt. But if you want to make it look even more festive, try a batch of our Margarita Salt. The green and orange colors of lime and orange zest look beautiful against the glass. Alex and I love doing this for entertaining.

Adding Clear Ice

Want to know the secret to professional looking cocktails made at home? Clear ice. What is it? I thought Alex was crazy when he told me he wanted to make a recipe for it. Clear ice is artisanal ice used in cocktails because of its crystal clear look and beautiful organic shapes. We try to have a batch ready before we have a cocktail hour because this ice truly steals the show.

You can make clear ice at home and it’s so easy! All you need is a small cooler and 24 hours, and your cocktails will look like you ordered it in a fancy bar. Here’s how to make clear ice.

When to Serve This Drink

The Skinny Margarita is perfect any time you’d make a regular margarita. Most people can’t tell the difference, and some people like it because it’s brighter and less sweet than the standard cocktail. I like it for:

  • Weeknight happy hour when I don’t want a heavy drink
  • Dinner parties, especially with Mexican-inspired food like my shrimp tacos or fish tacos
  • Batch-making ahead in a margarita pitcher (just scale everything up and refrigerate the mix; add ice when serving)
  • Girls’ night or any occasion where people want a lighter drink

Bushwacker Drink in glass with cherry and chocolate shavings

If you love cocktails with sweet, chocolaty flavor, the Bushwacker is for you! This creamy drink is like the lovechild of a chocolate milkshake and a classic piña colada, with rich coffee and coconut notes that make it absolutely irresistible.

As a drink expert who’s tested countless cocktail recipes over the years, the Bushwacker is one of my favorite frozen drinks! It’s perfect for sipping poolside as a summer cocktail, or as a dessert drink any time you’re dreaming of sun.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This is so delicious! I wanted something different than a variation of rum punch or with soda So glad to have tried this! Other recipes online used many other ingredients but this is simple and tastes even better.” -Isabella

What Is a Bushwacker?

The Bushwacker is a frozen cocktail made with rum, Kahlua, creme de cacao, cream of coconut, and milk, known for its creamy texture, sweet flavor, and boozy kick. Invented in the 1970’s in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, it has since become popular in Florida and the American South.

It belongs to a family of tropical frozen drinks alongside the Painkiller and Chi Chi, and it’s very popular in the Southern coastal states, especially Florida.

Bushwacker Ingredients

You’ll need a few specialty liqueurs but once you have them, you’ll be making Bushwackers on repeat! This frozen boozy milkshake relies on these ingredients blended to perfection with 3 cups of ice:

  • Rum (2 oz): I typically use aged rum for its subtle vanilla and caramel undertones, but white or dark rum work well too.
  • Kahlua (2 oz): The smooth sweetness of Mexican coffee liqueur Kahlua is perfect for this recipe. You can use leftovers in my classic Mudslide recipe.
  • Creme de cacao (2 oz): The popular chocolate liqueur creme de cacao is available in both white and dark varieties. The original Bushwacker had dark creme de cacao, but white is easier to find and what gives the drink its signature flavor.
  • Cream of coconut (2 oz): This is crucial—make sure you buy cream of coconut (the sweetened syrup for drinks), not coconut cream. It’s easy to find in squeeze bottles at liquor stores or online.
  • Milk: (2 oz): Any milk works here. I use 2%, but you can easily substitute oat milk or almond milk for a dairy-free version.

Tip: If you accidentally buy coconut cream, you can still save your Bushwhacker! Use 1 oz coconut cream and 1 oz simple syrup in place of the 2 oz cream of coconut.

The Story Behind The Drink

The Bushwacker has a charming origin story. It was created in 1975 at the Ship’s Store Pub in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands a tropical spin on the White Russian by bartender Angie Conigliaro and manager Tom Brokamp. Apparently they named it after a guest’s dog, an Afghan hound named Bushwack!

Tips for The Perfect Bushwacker

Once you’ve got your specialty liquors, mixing up the Bushwacker drink is a breeze! Here are a few tips:

  • Pour into a glass and garnish with a straw. Garnish with a maraschino cherry for a classic presentation.
  • Stir it with a straw if it separates. The drink tends to separate, which is normal: just stir it up with your straw while drinking!
  • It’s easily made dairy-free: There’s no dairy in any of the liqueurs in a Bushwacker drink, so it’s easy to convert it into a dairy free or vegan cocktail using any type of non-dairy milk, like oat milk or coconut milk.

Make-Ahead and Storage

The Bushwacker drink is definitely best fresh, but here are some tricks I’ve learned for planning ahead:

  • Store a blended Bushwacker in the freezer for up to 30 minutes before drinking: just give it a good stir before you dig in.
  • To make ahead, you can pre-measure all the liquid ingredients and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add ice and blend when ready to serve.
  • For parties, you can make double or triple batches; whatever fits in your blender!
  • Any leftover Bushwacker can be frozen in ice cube trays to use in future drinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Bushwacker taste like?

The dominant flavors are chocolate and coconut, with hints of coffee and rum. The creaminess adds a luxurious mouthfeel, and the overall taste is sweet and refreshing. It’s not a strong drink, but there’s enough alcohol that it should be enjoyed responsibly.

Is a Bushwacker similar to a Piña Colada?

While both are creamy and tropical, a Piña Colada features rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut. The Bushwacker adds coffee liqueur, dark crème de cacao, and skips the pineapple juice, resulting in a more chocolatey and coffee-forward flavor.

What kind of rum is best for a Bushwacker?

Dark rum is the traditional choice, offering a deeper flavor compared to lighter rums. You can also aged rum (anejo) with great results. White rum works but has a more straightforward flavor.

What is creme de cacao and what other drinks use it?

Creme de cacao is a chocolate liqueur. It’s possibly one of the first alcoholic beverages, made in the 1600’s by monks after cocoa beans were brought back to Europe from America (source).

Use it to make creme de cacao drinks like the Brandy AlexanderChocolate Martini, or Grasshopper.

What is the difference between cream of coconut and coconut cream?

Cream of coconut is a sweetened syrup for drinks, made with coconut cream and sugar. You can use up leftovers in coconut cocktails like the Piña Colada, Chi Chi, Painkiller, or Coconut Martini.

Coconut cream is unsweetened, very thick, and has a strong coconut flavor. It’s typically sold in cans next to the coconut milk.

Read more at Cream of Coconut vs Coconut Cream.

What other drinks use Kahlua?

There are many Kahlua drinks! Try it in a Mudslide, Espresso Martini, B-52, Kahlua Coffee, Mind Eraser, Colorado Bulldog, Black Russian or White Russian.

The sweet tart green puree is full of good-for-you ingredients.

Two green detox smoothies in glasses with colorful straws and topped with chia seeds

Looking to drink your daily fruits and veggies? Try this detox smoothie, full of all-natural, fresh ingredients! This green puree is 100% fruits and vegetables; no powders or supplements (and no detox diets).

It’s ideal for when you want to infuse your body with good-for-you ingredients, and bonus: it tastes amazing, too! The burst of tangy, sweet-tart flavor made me an instant fan. As a smoothie expert of over 50 smoothie recipes, this one stands out.

What is a Detox Smoothie?

This detox smoothie is not part of a detox diet, and I do not recommend them. A detox is a short-term period of fasting followed by a period of eating fruits and vegetables. But there’s no evidence that these cleanses provide tangible benefits, and they can often cause harm (per Healthline).

Instead, I define a detox smoothie as one made with 100% vegetables and fruits. This makes it easy for you to infuse good-for-you ingredients into your lifestyle (and it tastes great). There are no supplements, powders, or other substances required; just nourishing whole foods!

Ingredients You’ll Need

What’s in this detox smoothie? This recipe quickly jumped to the top of my favorites list for its burst of tangy, sweet-tart flavor; plus, it’s made with simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to whiz together in a blender:

  • Apple: Apple brings sweetness and body to the puree. I like a sweet-tart type like Pink Lady or Granny Smith, but any works here.
  • Banana: Bananas are key to a smoothie’s creamy texture. If you don’t like or can’t eat bananas, add another apple.
  • Spinach: Baby spinach is easy to throw in handfuls, or use washed, chopped spinach. You can also substitute chopped kale or chard!
  • Frozen pineapple: Frozen pineapple adds sweetness and an icy texture. If you prefer, substitute frozen mango.
  • Fresh ginger: Ginger root is optional, but it adds a fresh, spicy flavor that’s extremely satisfying.
  • Chia seeds: Chia seeds add protein and fiber to this smoothie.
  • Lemon juice: Lemon juice brings out the fruity flavors (it accentuates a smoothie like salt does in savory food).
  • Water and ice: Blend it all up with water and ice!
Spinach and chia seeds added into the blender for a detox smoothie

Tips for Working With Fresh Ginger

Fresh ginger root might not always be in your refrigerator, but it adds a big punch of flavor to this detox smoothie! While it’s optional, I highly recommend using it here. Pick up some in the produce section of your grocery store (then use the rest for these ginger recipes!).

It can be tricky to peel, so I’ve got some tips for you:

  • Peel with a spoon! This works much better than a vegetable peeler! Use the edge of a spoon to peel the ginger skin.
  • Grate it. Use a grater or microplane to grate the ginger into a pulp.
  • Or mince it. If you don’t have a grater, use a large chef’s knife to slice the ginger thinly in one direction, then chop in the other direction until it’s minced into small pieces.

Chia Seed Nutrition

Another key ingredient in this detox smoothie is chia seeds! The smoothie doesn’t have any dairy or a natural source of protein, so I decided to add a bit of chia seeds for a protein and fiber boost. Here’s what these little seeds have to offer (per Healthline):

  • Chia seeds are very high in fiber. 2 tablespoons of chia seeds have 11 grams of fiber, a whopping 44% of your daily need!
  • Chia seeds are high in protein. 2 tablespoons have 4 grams of protein or about 8% of your daily need.
  • Chia seeds are high in antioxidants. Researchers agree that this can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, boost the immune system, and improve mental health.

Storage Notes

Can you make this smoothie in advance? Yes! This detox smoothie is best after 1 day in the refrigerator, so you can blend it up and enjoy later. You can get by with 2 days of storage. Just make sure to shake it before serving, as it may separate naturally when refrigerated.

Dietary Notes

This recipe is vegetarian, vegan, plant-based, dairy-free, and gluten-free.

Paloma Mocktail https://www.acouplecooks.com/paloma-mocktail/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/paloma-mocktail/#respond Tue, 28 Apr 2026 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=177283 This paloma mocktail is full of tart grapefruit, zingy lime, a salted rim – zero tequila required! It’s ready in 5 minutes and a refreshing non alcoholic drink.

Paloma Mocktail

After years of developing cocktail and mocktail recipes, I’ve become a little obsessed with nailing the non-alcoholic versions of classic drinks. And by that, I mean not just glorified fruit juice: non alcoholic drinks worth making!

This paloma mocktail is so much fun and everything I love about a great mocktail: refreshing, delicious, and interestingly complex! It’s similar to my popular Virgin Margarita: which has a little flavor secret to make it pop. There are no non alcoholic spirits needed: just normal, delicious ingredients! Here’s how to make a virgin spin on the classic Paloma.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • 5 minutes, no blender or cocktail shaker. Squeeze, stir, pour. That’s it!
  • Refreshing, complex flavor. The pickle brine and honey sound weird, but they make the best drink: I promise!
  • A perfect party drink. Make a big batch of the base and let guests top their own glass with bubbles.

What You’ll Need

A classic Paloma recipe, a Mexican cocktail that’s a cousin of the margarita, uses grapefruit soda and tequila. Here’s what I use for my Paloma mocktail recipe:

  • Fresh grapefruit juice: You want that fresh-squeezed flavor: about ½ to 2/3 of a grapefruit gets you what you need for this drink.
  • Fresh lime juice: The lime lifts the grapefruit and makes everything taste more tart.
  • Honey (or simple syrup): A very small amount balances the flavors: I like keeping this drink more sweet tart. I like using honey because it’s all natural but you can use simple syrup if you want. Maple syrup is usually my go-to but I didn’t want to make the drink too dark in color.
  • Pickle brine: I know, I know! It sounds weird. But I use this in my Virgin Margarita to add that tequila-like funk and it really works! It’s the way to make it feel like a cocktail without alcohol. If you don’t have it, you could try olive brine.
  • Tonic water: I reach for tonic water because it has a little quinine, which adds more flavor intrigue. Grapefruit soda also works for a sweeter drink! Here’s my Guide to Tonic Water for more info on bubbly options.
  • Flaky sea salt & tajín: I love adding Tajín to the rim: it’s a Mexican seasoning blend of chili peppers, lime, and salt that adds a burst of tangy, spicy flavor.

How to Make a Paloma Mocktail

This comes together in minutes. Here’s the method (or jump to the recipe below):

  1. Prep your glass. Cut a small notch in a grapefruit wedge and run the cut side along the rim of your glass — or along the side (see the photos). Dip the rim into a small plate of flaky sea salt and tajín to coat.
  2. Mix the base. Add the grapefruit juice, lime juice, honey, and pickle brine directly to the glass. Stir until the honey is fully dissolved.
  3. Add ice and top with tonic water. Fill the glass with ice, then pour the tonic water over the top. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and serve immediately.

Pitcher Paloma Mocktail (Perfect for a Party)

This drink is perfect for batching: it’s great for parties! The base comes together in seconds, and because you’re adding tonic water per glass, every drink stays perfectly fizzy. See the Notes section in the recipe below.

I love this version for baby showers especially: it’s fun , non-alcoholic, and looks vibrant in a glass with a salted rim and a grapefruit wedge.

Serving Ideas

This paloma mocktail is great when you need a drink that’s refreshing and non alcoholic. Here’s what I’d pair it with:

Apple Cider Old Fashioned https://www.acouplecooks.com/apple-cider-old-fashioned/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/apple-cider-old-fashioned/#comments Sun, 26 Apr 2026 19:52:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=146894 The apple cider Old Fashioned is a fall spin on the classic! Spiced apple cider syrup sweetens this whiskey cocktail.

Apple cider Old Fashioned in a short glass, garnished with fruit and a cinnamon stick

Here’s a fun fall cocktail that’s ideal for any whiskey lover: the apple cider Old Fashioned! Swapping out the sugar for apple cider syrup infuses this classic drink with fruity, spiced seasonal flavor.

Each sip has notes of apple and orange, cinnamon and spice, and vanilla and oak. If you’re in the mood for a boozy showstopper, this is the drink for you!

Ingredients You’ll Need

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails in existence, first documented in the early 1800’s by a New York paper. This spin uses apple cider syrup instead of a standard sugar cube to infuse the drink with homey flavors.

Using syrup in this drink is ideal because adding straight apple cider waters it down, making it more like a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Apple cider syrup (see below)
  • Angostura bitters
  • Bourbon or rye whiskey
  • Orange peel
  • Apple slices and cocktail cherry, for garnish (optional)
  • Large clear ice cube, for serving

Making Apple Cider Syrup

The apple cider syrup is what makes this apple cider Old Fashioned sing! The boiled apple cider infuses apple and cinnamon flavors and adds sweetness. Here are a few things to note about this drink component:

  • It takes 30 minutes to make. Boil apple cider with sugar and a cinnamon stick on the stovetop for 30 to 35 minutes, until reduced and syrupy.
  • Make a batch in advance. This is an easy component to make in advance and refrigerate until serving. It stores up to 2 weeks refrigerated.
  • Want to use it for more drinks? Try the Fall Margarita!

Apple Cider Old Fashioned: Quick Version

Don’t have 30 minutes to spare and want to whip up this apple cider Old Fashioned on demand? You can do that, too. Follow the recipe below, but use 1 tablespoon of apple cider and 1 tablespoon of simple syrup. Taste and adjust flavors as desired.

Apple cider Old Fashioned in a short glass, garnished with fruit and a cinnamon stick

Step It Up With Clear Ice

Want the very best Old Fashioned? Use clear ice. These are crystal clear ice cubes you can cut into organic shapes that make your drink look like it’s from a fancy bar. These contrast with the cloudy ice cubes that come from an ice tray. They’re an absolute must for an Old Fashioned! Here’s how to do it:

  • Make clear ice in a small cooler. Go to How to Make Clear Ice for instructions! The cooler just needs to fit inside your freezer.
  • Use a clear ice tray. I use this clear ice tray, and it works well! It also fits easily into your freezer.

  • Cook Time: 0 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

For the apple cider Old Fashioned

  • 1/2 to 1 ounce apple cider syrup (see below or variation*)
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 ounces** bourbon or rye whiskey
  • Orange peel
  • Apple slices and cocktail cherry, for garnish (optional)
  • Large clear ice cube, for serving

For the apple cider syrup (makes ¾ cup)

  • 4 cups apple cider
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. To make the apple cider syrup*: Place the apple cider, granulated sugar, and cinnamon sticks in a saucepan. Bring to a low boil, then maintain a low boil for 30 to 35 minutes until reduced to ¾ cup. Use immediately or refrigerate until using (stores up to 2 weeks refrigerated).
  2. To make the Old Fashioned: Add the apple cider syrup, bitters, and whiskey to a lowball glass and stir to combine. Add a large ice cube.
  3. Use a knife to remove a 1″ wide strip of the orange peel. Squeeze the orange peel into the drink to release the oils. Gently run the peel around the edge of the glass, then place it in the glass. If desired, garnish with a cocktail cherry for additional sweetness.

Notes

*Variation: For a quick version, follow the recipe above but in place of apple cider syrup, use 1 tablespoon apple cider and 1 tablespoon simple syrup, then adjust flavors as desired.

Here’s a spin on the classic whiskey sour that will have everyone talking: cranberry orange whiskey sour! This fruity combination is perfect for winter and fall cocktails, or for using up extra cranberry juice.

The bright berries add a fruity, tart intensity to the finish of each sip. Paired with bourbon, fresh orange and lemon juice, and maple syrup, it makes the best signature drink!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Made this drink for my me and my mom, and we both LOVED it. I love whiskey sours, and this one tastes so perfect. This will definitely be my go-to recipe going forward. Thanks!” -Jasmine S.

Cranberry Orange Whiskey Sour Ingredients

This cranberry orange whiskey sour is a play on the classic Whiskey Sour, an iconic drink that goes back centuries. The earliest mention of the drink in literature dates to the 1870s, meaning this cocktail existed much earlier than most classic cocktails that appeared in the 1910s and 20’s.

  • Whiskey (I prefer bourbon for a cranberry bourbon sour)
  • Fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Unsweetened cranberry juice
  • Simple syrup or maple syrup
  • Orange wheel or twist, cocktail cherry or cranberries, for garnish
Cranberry orange Whiskey Sour garnished with an orange slice, cocktail cherry, and rosemary sprig

Sweetened vs Unsweetened Cranberry Juice

For cranberry cocktails, I prefer unsweetened cranberry juice rather than cranberry juice cocktail, which is sweetened. Because it’s a small quantity of cranberry juice (¾ ounce), you can use either here. If all you can find is the sweetened version, it will make the drink slightly sweeter.

  • Sweetened cranberry juice, aka cranberry juice cocktail, contains added sugars and sometimes high-fructose corn syrup. It is the type used for classic cranberry cocktails of the past, like the Vodka Cranberry.
  • 100% cranberry juice is easy to find at your local grocery store. The benefit? The color is brighter, and you can adjust the sweetness to your taste.

Optional: Egg White Foam

Bartenders have added egg whites to cocktails since the 1860’s to create a frothy texture on top and a creamy, rich flavor with each sip. It’s customary to have an egg white foam on a sour, so if you’d like, you can add that to this cranberry orange whiskey sour!

You can make the best frothy egg white foam with 1 egg white and the drink ingredients, using a technique called a dry shake: shaking the cocktail ingredients without ice first. Here’s how it works:

  • The first shake without ice lets the protein in the egg begin to foam rather than be diluted by the ice.
  • The second shake with ice cools the drink and strengthens the foam. Strain it into the glass, and you’ll get a thick, white frothy layer.
  • Go to Whiskey Sour with Egg White for the full technique!

Step It Up With Clear Ice

Want to make a professional-looking cranberry orange whiskey sour? Use clear ice. These large, crystal-clear ice cubes make your drink look like it’s from a fancy bar, vs. the cloudy ice cubes that come from an ice tray. They’re perfect for stepping up this drink.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/chocolate-banana-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/chocolate-banana-smoothie/#comments Sun, 26 Apr 2026 00:47:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=80620 This chocolate banana smoothie tastes like a healthy chocolate milkshake! Get your fix with these good-for-you ingredients.

Two glasses of chocolate banana smoothie with colorful straws

Here’s a way to get your chocolate fix while eating something healthy: try a chocolate banana smoothie! This smoothie is full of good-for-you ingredients, but tastes like a healthy chocolate milkshake. It’s sweet enough to feel like a treat, but not so intense that it feels like dessert.

Bananas, cocoa powder, and Greek yogurt make magic in the blender with just a little maple syrup for sweetener. This recipe is perfect for when you’re craving a treat (and my kid thinks it’s actual ice cream!).

Ingredients for This Chocolate Banana Smoothie

There’s not a lot to this chocolate banana smoothie. In fact, I developed it around ingredients I always have in my pantry and fridge. Here’s what you’ll need to have on hand:

  • Bananas: Here’s the best part: no freezing necessary! Use room-temperature bananas and lots of ice to get that perfect creamy texture.
  • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is ideal for adding to smoothies because it’s packed with protein and has probiotics for a healthy gut. Skip this to make it a vegan smoothie.
  • Milk: Use any type of milk here, dairy or non-dairy. Add more non-dairy milk for vegan.
  • Cocoa powder: Cocoa powder gives that signature chocolate flavor when combined with the sweetener.
  • Maple syrup: Maple syrup is my sweetener of choice; you can also use honey or agave syrup.
  • Ice: Add quite a bit of ice, and it all comes together into a smooth, chocolaty puree.

Protein Add-Ins

Want to add a little more protein to your chocolate banana smoothie? Here are my best recommendations, both plant-based and dairy protein:

  • Peanut butter: What could be a better pairing? Peanut butter goes hand in hand with chocolate and banana (it also adds a hint of plant-based protein). Start with 1 to 2 tablespoons. Adding peanut butter increases the calories, but also makes this smoothie more filling.
  • More Greek yogurt: Double the amount in this recipe for an even more filling smoothie. This is great for breakfasts or post-workout snacks.
  • Protein powder: You can always hide protein powder in smoothies! Typically, I prefer to avoid it because it can leave an odd aftertaste. But this smoothie would be a good one since the chocolate flavor is strong enough to mask it.

Vegan Variation

Prefer to have a vegan smoothie? You can easily make this chocolate banana smoothie plant-based by doing the following:

  • Cut the Greek yogurt.
  • Use oat milk or almond milk, adding a little more as needed until it blends.
  • Consider adding peanut butter for added plant-based protein.

Dark Chocolate Version

Are you a dark chocolate lover like me? Here’s what you can do to turn this into a dark chocolate banana smoothie.

  • Use Dutch process cocoa powder (sometimes labeled dark cocoa powder or Dutched cocoa).
  • Start with 3 tablespoons of Dutch process cocoa powder and add more to taste.
  • You may also need to add a bit more sweetener to counter the cocoa’s darkness.

Dutch process cocoa powder is essentially a dark chocolate version of cocoa powder. It’s been treated with an alkali to neutralize its pH, which gives it a darker color and milder flavor. I use it in lots of my recipes to get a rich chocolaty flavor, like Flourless Chocolate Cake and Chocolate Banana Muffins.

Smoothie Storage

This smoothie is best served immediately. For leftovers, store in a covered jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Skeleton Key Cocktail https://www.acouplecooks.com/skeleton-key-cocktail/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/skeleton-key-cocktail/#comments Sat, 25 Apr 2026 19:25:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=146845 The Skeleton Key cocktail is the ideal blend of bourbon, elderflower, and ginger beer! This fun drink is easy to mix up right in the glass.

Skelton Key cocktail served with clear ice, with bitters being poured over top and the St Germain and Ginger Beer in the background

Here’s a fun drink that’s easy to whip up and packs a massive flavor punch: the Skeleton Key cocktail! This combination of bourbon, elderflower, and ginger beer is a unique highball drink that’s bubbly, floral, and bittersweet!

Topping it off with bitters creates a floating orange haze. It’s a modern classic invented in Detroit with a spooky origin story, but I think it works any time of the year. Here’s how to make this easy cocktail.

What’s in a Skeleton Key Cocktail?

The Skeleton Key cocktail is a highball made with bourbon, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and ginger beer. It’s topped with bitters that form an eerie orange haze floating on the surface.

The Skeleton Key was invented in 2011 at the now-closed Detroit restaurant Roast. Then, bartender Brian Volmer created a cocktail for a local Halloween competition, which went on to become popular at bars around Detroit.

The drink’s name is inspired by its rusty color, which made Vollmer think of the skeleton keys that opened the locks in his grandparents’ house. This highball cocktail is a beautiful balance between bourbon, floral elderflower liqueur, and spicy ginger beer. While it’s the perfect Halloween cocktail, I think it’s more fun any time of the year!

The ingredients for a Skeleton Key cocktail are:

  • Bourbon
  • St. Germain elderflower liqueur
  • Lemon juice
  • Ginger beer
  • Angostura bitters

Tips for Making the Drink

Want to whip up a Skeleton key cocktail? Here are a few quick notes on this drink:

  • It can be built in the glass! Any time I can get away without dirtying a cocktail shaker, I do it! This one is perfect for entertaining.
  • Add the ginger beer right before serving. To preserve the bubbles, don’t mix in the ginger beer until right before serving.
  • Generously shake in the bitters (and if desired, stir!). The fun part of this drink is the haze of bitters that hangs at the top. However, it tastes best when the bitters are integrated into the drink, so you may want to stir before drinking.

More About St Germain

This drink requires a bottle of St Germain elderflower liqueur, but it’s absolutely worth a purchase! This tasty liqueur is a favorite of mine that you can use to make a French Gimlet, Hugo, and these 10 Best St Germain Cocktail recipes.

  • St Germain is a liqueur that’s made with elderflowers, the small white flowers of an elderberry plant. The flavor is light, sweetly floral, and fragrant. To pronounce it, say “Sahn-jer-MAHN”.
  • Fun fact: it’s relatively new to the scene. St Germain was invented in 2007! The vintage-looking bottle makes it seem like it has hundreds of years of history, but a guy named Rob invented it in 2007. (Here’s the story behind it.)
  • How much does it cost? That beautiful bottle will set you back about $20 to $30.

Best Ginger Beer

There are lots of ginger ale brands on the market, but not all are created equal! I have a few favorites when it comes to ginger beer:

  • Q Ginger Beer: This is my top choice! It comes in small cans, so you only have to use a little at a time.
  • Fever Tree Ginger Beer: Fever Tree is made with real ginger and has no artificial sweeteners.

Zucchini Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/zucchini-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/zucchini-smoothie/#comments Sat, 25 Apr 2026 15:02:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=148880 Enjoy a satisfying and nutritious zucchini smoothie, perfect for breakfast or a quick snack. It’s easy to make and delightfully delicious!

Zucchini smoothies garnished with zucchini slices and colorful straws

Got zucchini? Here’s a fun way to use it: blend it into a smoothie! This versatile vegetable loads fiber into any blended drink. This one comes out fruity and creamy, and you can make it two ways: green or chocolate! (The chocolate variation is my favorite, but who’s counting?)

You can use either frozen zucchini or room-temperature zucchini if you want to whip it up right away. Here are all the variations!

Ingredients for This Zucchini Smoothie

This zucchini smoothie is a fun way to use up this green vegetable if you’re not in the mood for baking zucchini bread or zucchini muffins. It relies on bananas and peanut butter as the base, lightly sweetened with a hint of maple syrup and made creamy with your milk of choice.

My son tried this and couldn’t stop sipping it! (Of course, it was the chocolate variation.) Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Frozen zucchini: Zucchini acts as the ice here. You’ll need just 2 hours to freeze the zucchini! Alternatively, room-temperature zucchini with frozen bananas works if you prefer.
  • Banana: A room-temperature banana is all you need; no need to freeze it! It’s essential for the smoothie’s creamy texture.
  • Spinach: This ingredient is just for the green variation. It adds a nice green color to the smoothie (but you can use it in the chocolate variation as well).
  • Milk: Use your favorite milk here, dairy or non-dairy, both work, making it a vegan smoothie. You can also use a combination of Greek yogurt and milk to heighten the protein (see below).
  • Peanut butter: Peanut butter adds a bit of protein and a nuance to the flavor; add more as desired.
  • Maple syrup: Pure maple syrup is my sweetener of choice, but you can use honey or agave syrup as other options.
  • Vanilla extract and cinnamon: These add just the right hints of flavor.

Chocolate Variation

Want to make a chocolate zucchini smoothie? Simply add cocoa powder to the list of ingredients above. You’ll likely want a touch more maple syrup to sweeten the smoothie and make it taste chocolatey.

It’s preferable not to use spinach in this variation, as it adds a tinge of green to the chocolate’s brown color. However, the cocoa powder is so dark you likely won’t notice it, so you can throw it in if desired. (My 6-year-old didn’t mind one bit.)

How to Freeze Zucchini

You’ll need to freeze the zucchini for this smoothie at least 2 hours in advance. Here’s how to do it:

  • Slice the zucchini into thin half-moon shapes. Place on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze for at least 2 hours.
  • For longer storage, flash-freeze the zucchini in the same manner for 1 hour, then transfer it to a sealed container and store it up to 3 months.
  • If you have frozen bananas on hand, another option is to use room temperature zucchini and frozen bananas!
Zucchini's on a cutting board being sliced

Ways to Add More Protein

This zucchini smoothie doesn’t have much protein on its own, unless you use dairy milk (which has 8 grams of protein per 1 cup). If desired, you can add more protein to make it even more filling! Here are a few options with dairy and plant-based protein:

  • Stir in Greek yogurt. Use ½ cup Greek yogurt and ½ cup milk for a significant protein boost (Full-fat Greek yogurt has about 10 grams of protein in ½ cup).
  • Chia seeds. You can add plant-based protein and fiber with chia seeds. Two tablespoons of chia seeds add 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber.
  • Vanilla protein powder: I use this protein powder that has natural ingredients and a flavor that’s not too artificial. Just remember to reduce the maple syrup, since protein powder already adds sweetness.

More Variations and Mix-in Ideas

Want a few different mix-ins for this zucchini smoothie? Try these flavors:

  • Use almond butter or cashew butter. Any nut butter works here! Add more nut butter to taste.
  • Swap in other frozen fruit. I recommend using at least one banana, but you can use another 1 cup frozen pineapple or mango instead of the second banana.
  • Throw in coconut. A handful of coconut or toasted coconut adds a tropical vibe.
  • Sweeten with Medjool dates instead. You can use Medjool dates to sweeten if desired. Start with 2 large dates and add more to taste.

Bourbon Old Fashioned https://www.acouplecooks.com/bourbon-old-fashioned/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/bourbon-old-fashioned/#respond Sat, 25 Apr 2026 14:42:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=147490 The bourbon Old Fashioned is a smooth, spirit-forward sipper that’s one of the oldest cocktails in history! This classic is here to stay.

Bourbon Old Fashioned in a glass garnished with an orange peel surrounded by sugar cubes and a bottle of bourbon

If you’re a bourbon fan, you’ve got to try it in one of the oldest cocktails there is: the Old Fashioned! This classic blend of spirits, sugar, water, bitters, and a spritz of orange is truly sophisticated and sublime.

The bourbon Old Fashioned lets that bourbon shine, gussied up with just enough to accentuate its classic vanilla and oak flavor notes. Here’s how to make this classic recipe, along with a few tips for making a standout version at home.

Ingredients You’ll Need

The Old Fashioned cocktail is the first cocktail in history and has been around for over two centuries. The definition of the word cocktail was first documented in 1806 in a New York paper, which called it a “concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar”— essentially a recipe for an Old Fashioned!

When more cocktails came along in the 1880’s, they needed a name for that original cocktail, and the “Old Fashioned” was born. The classic drink can be made with any whiskey, but this spin uses bourbon. The Old Fashioned ingredients are:

  • Bourbon whiskey
  • Sugar cube
  • Water
  • Angostura bitters
  • Orange peel
Four roses small batch bottle of bourbon

Best Bourbon to Use

Most bourbons have a characteristic sweetness, which makes for a highly sippable drink in the spirit-forward Old Fashioned. Use your favorite type.

You can go with a higher-end craft or single-barrel bourbon, but I recommend a mid-range blended bourbon. Anything in the $25 to $35 range for a 750ml bottle is considered mid-range, but you can go as high-end as you like! Some brands I’d recommend are:

  • $: Elijah Craig Small Batch
  • $$: Four Roses Small Batch or Woodford Reserve
  • $$$: Bulleit 10 Year Bourbon

How to Make a Bourbon Old Fashioned

There are lots of opinions on how to make the best bourbon Old Fashioned. The way I like it is the classic method, using a sugar cube and muddling it right in the glass. The classic method for how to make an Old Fashioned is:

  • Shake 4 dashes bitters on 1 sugar cube, then muddle with ½ teaspoon water. This is the traditional method, though you can also use simple syrup if you like (1 ½ teaspoons). I prefer the nuanced sweetness of the sugar cube best; it really lets the whiskey shine. Don’t worry if it doesn’t dissolve all the way.
  • Add 2 ounces of bourbon.
  • Garnish with clear ice, orange peel, and a cocktail cherry. Add a large ice cube and an orange peel, squeezing it over the drink to release the oils. Add a cocktail cherry if you like!
Bourbon Old Fashioned in a glass garnished with an orange peel surrounded by sugar cubes

Clear Ice Makes the Drink

An Old Fashioned isn’t complete without a large chunk of clear ice, in my opinion! Clear ice is crystal clear, not cloudy like standard ice, and can be cut into large organic shapes that fill the cocktail glass. There are two simple ways to make clear ice for all your home cocktails:

  • Make it using a small cooler. You can make a batch that will last for many drinks, store it in the freezer, and cut it into large cubes to serve. All you need is 24 hours and a small cooler! Check out my tutorial, How to Make Clear Ice.
  • Use a purchased clear ice tray. With the popularity of home bartending, there are now some great options for clear ice trays. I like this one: ClearlyFrozen Home Clear Ice Maker.

Add syrup to your drip coffee, make iced coffee, or make a pumpkin spice latte.

A cup of pumpkin spice coffee, with a cinnamon stick

Are you a pumpkin spice lover? Then let me introduce you to four ways to make the very best pumpkin spice coffee! Whether you like hot coffee or iced, lattes or black, I’ve got a recipe for you.

The most basic way, I think? Make pumpkin spice syrup and drizzle it into your drip coffee; simple, easy, and fun! But if you’re more of a pumpkin spice latte fan, I get it. I’ve got recipes for that, and iced coffee to boot.

How to Make Pumpkin Spice Coffee: 4 Ways!

There are lots of ways to make pumpkin spice coffee, depending on what you’re looking for. The easiest way is to drizzle a little syrup into your drip coffee. But you can also add pumpkin spice to the grounds, or make a tasty latte! Here are the four basic ways I like to make pumpkin spice coffee:

  • Pumpkin Spice Coffee: Hot drip coffee plus pumpkin spice syrup
  • Iced Coffee: Homemade spice mix, drip coffee, milk and ice
  • Pumpkin Spice Latte: This hot pumpkin spice latte uses espresso, pumpkin spices, pumpkin puree, and milk
  • Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte: A cold iced pumpkin spice latte uses the same ingredients served over ice
A cup of pumpkin spice coffee, with a cinnamon stick and a pot of pumpkin spice syrup

Making Pumpkin Spice Syrup

For the basic pumpkin spice coffee, you’ll need a homemade pumpkin spice syrup. This is a great method because you end up with a jar of syrup that works for lots of drinks! Here’s what you’ll need for the syrup:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice

Simmer the ingredients for about 2 minutes until they dissolve, then strain them through a fine-mesh strainer. Refrigerate until ready to use. This recipe makes a big batch you can use for about 12 drinks!

A glass of pumpkin spice latte, sprinkled with spices

Drip Coffee Methods

If you’re making pumpkin spice coffee or iced coffee, you’ll need a great, hot cup of joe. Of course, you can use any coffee-making method you like, including an electric coffee maker! But here are a few methods I think make a better pot of coffee:

  • Chemex: This is my top method for delicious pour-over coffee.
  • French Press: This French Press Coffee is also top quality and makes a great cup.
  • Moka Pot: Moka Pot Coffee falls somewhere between drip coffee and espresso; it’s very strong but pairs well with pumpkin spices.

Make It a Pumpkin Spice Latte

Do you love a good pumpkin spice latte? This drink is a different way to enjoy pumpkin spices. It uses espresso, milk, and both pumpkin spices and real pumpkin puree. You can also make an iced pumpkin spice latte, which I like even better!

They’re similar to the Starbucks drinks, but made like a classic cafe latte. For these options, go to the following recipes:

Frozen Coffee https://www.acouplecooks.com/frozen-coffee/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/frozen-coffee/#comments Wed, 22 Apr 2026 17:37:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=128825 This frozen coffee recipe is quick and easy to blend up at home! It’s a sweet, sippable drink that’s better than any coffee shop.

Frozen coffee in a tall glass, served with whipped cream and colorful straws

Here’s a coffee drink that’s icy, bold, rich, and so easy to whip up at home: frozen coffee! There are lots of different ways to make a frozen coffee, like a frappe or even an iced mocha. But this recipe is quick and simple with just 3 ingredients!

Grab some leftover strong coffee, ice, and a blender to make this easy and refreshing coffee drink.

Ingredients for Frozen Coffee

Frozen coffee is a drink made by blending coffee with ice and sugar. It’s similar to a frappé, a frozen drink made with blended instant coffee, sugar, and water or milk. This drink is even simpler, because all you need is to blend these three ingredients:

  • ¾ cup strong coffee
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar

You can also add 2 tablespoons or so of milk or creamer to make it creamier. It’s so quick and easy to make that it’s become a favorite caffeinated treat to whip up in the afternoons, especially in summer! This recipe makes a medium-sized drink, but feel free to double it for a larger drink closer to what you’d find at a coffee shop.

Tips for Making Strong Coffee

What’s the definition of a strong coffee? Here are a few methods for making a cup of joe that work in this frozen coffee recipe. You’ll want it strong enough so the coffee flavor shines through after blending, so a normal pot of coffee doesn’t quite do the trick.

  • Use twice the amount of grounds as you would with your usual coffee method. Try double-strength Pourover Coffee, French Press Coffee, or your home coffee maker.
  • Use a Moka Pot. The Moka Pot or Bialetti makes a strong coffee similar to espresso. You can use straight Moka Pot coffee or water it down slightly (one recipe makes nearly enough for two of these drinks).
  • Use cold brew. You can use purchased cold brew or homemade cold brew for frozen coffee! Just make sure to water it down to make the ¾ cup cold brew (don’t use ¾ cup concentrate).

Variations and Add-Ins

For a creamy frozen coffee, add any sort of dairy to this recipe! Here are a few ideas for adding a dairy-based body:

  • Whole milk or 2% milk
  • Non-dairy milk like oat milk
  • Half and half
  • Coffee creamer like vanilla, hazelnut, or other flavors
  • Chocolate sauce

For the Topping

If you like, you can top your frozen coffee with a good dollop of whipped cream. It’s not necessary for flavor, but it makes for a fun garnish! Here are some options:

  • Try homemade whipped cream
  • Make a batch of vegan whipped cream as a dairy-free option
  • Go for purchased whipped cream like Reddi-Whip or others
  • Make cold foam, a Starbucks invention of frothed nonfat milk that makes a frothy topping for cold coffee drinks

Dietary Notes

This recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. For vegan, plant-based, and dairy-free, omit the whipped cream or use vegan whipped cream.

Here’s a smoothie that’s full of cozy, spiced, naturally sweet flavor: an apple smoothie! It works anytime and in any season, but of course, it’s perfect for fall. In fact, it’s a fun way to enjoy the flavors of apple pie or apple crumble!

Cinnamon and vanilla are the perfect complement to the sweet-tart fruit. It’s loaded with protein from Greek yogurt, which gives it a delightfully creamy texture. You’ll feel like you’re drinking a wholesome version of an apple pie milkshake!

Ingredients in This Apple Smoothie

The great thing about this apple smoothie? You might already have the ingredients on hand. If you stock bananas and Greek yogurt like I do, you’ll be able to whip up this smoothie in no time. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Apples: You can use any variety. For the best flavor, use sweet-tart apples like Pink Lady, Honey Crisp, or Granny Smith (avoid Red Delicious).
  • Banana: Frozen bananas work great, but you can also use a room temperature banana.
  • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt adds lots of protein to this smoothie and live probiotics, which help gut health.
  • Milk: Use any type of milk, including non-dairy milk.
  • Ice: Ice helps to get just the right texture.
  • Vanilla and cinnamon: These bring in that apple pie flavor!

Sweeten With Maple Syrup

This apple smoothie tastes fantastic with no added sweetener; it’s perfectly sweet and tart! However, the flavor can depend on the fruit’s ripeness and your personal tastes. Take a taste, and if you’d like it sweeter, add a bit of maple syrup or honey. This is a nice option if you’re looking for a sweet treat to take the place of a dessert.

Start with ½ tablespoon in the blender and increase if needed. You may want to stir it in instead of blending, because if you over-blend, the texture can get far too liquid.

Vegan Variation

Want to make a vegan apple smoothie instead? Try my Green Apple Smoothie recipe! It pairs green apple and cashews to make a beautifully sweet tart vegan smoothie. The cashews add plant-based protein, helping it stay satiating and keep you full.

More Flavor Variations

This apple smoothie tastes amazing as is, but you can mix it up even more. Here are some ideas for fun variations on the theme:

  • Ginger: Add ½ teaspoon grated ginger to the mix for a spicy brightness.
  • Spices: Add ⅛ teaspoon allspice or nutmeg. Or replace the cinnamon with the same amount of pumpkin pie spice or chai spices.
  • Oats: Add whole grains by throwing in ½ cup rolled oats.
  • Pecans, cashews, or almonds: Throw in ¼ cup nuts to add a nutty undertone and even more plant-based protein.
  • Nut butter: Or add 1 to 2 tablespoons almond butter, peanut butter, or cashew butter.

Apples Nutrition

Apples are good for you and full of nutrients! Here’s a little breakdown on some of the top benefits of apples (according to Healthline):

  • Apples are a good source of vitamin C. One apple contains 14% of your daily needs.
  • They are full of fiber and water. One apple has 4 grams of fiber, or about 15% of your daily needs.
  • Apples contain pectin, a type of fiber that acts as a prebiotic and helps with gut health.
  • Most of the nutrients in apples are in the skin, so you should eat the skin as much as possible.

Smoothie Storage

This apple smoothie is best served immediately. For leftovers, store in a covered jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.

Dietary Notes

This recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free. For vegan, plant-based, and dairy-free, see the variation above.

Creamy Almond Butter Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/almond-butter-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/almond-butter-smoothie/#comments Thu, 16 Apr 2026 15:04:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=125137 This almond butter smoothie is creamy with a hint of chai spices! It’s the ideal frosty puree for a snack or breakfast.

An almond butter smoothie in a glass, served with a straw and surrounded by scattered almonds

If you’re an almond butter lover, you’ll adore this star ingredient in drinkable form. Try this almond butter smoothie! You can add a dollop of almond butter to any type of smoothie you like, of course, but this one is especially tasty.

It goes big on almond flavor, pairing it with banana, pineapple, and chai spices for an irresistibly sippable drink. Here’s how it’s done!

Ingredients in This Almond Butter Smoothie

This almond butter smoothie pairs sweet fruits with nutty almond butter for a protein-packed drink. Inspired by my friend’s local almond butter company (Revival), I paired a loose interpretation of chai spices with the nut butter for a cozy, intriguing flavor nuance.

You’ll love this natural pairing of almond butter and cozy spices. Here’s what you’ll need to put this one together:

  • Almond butter: Use your favorite brand, creamy or thick, sweetened or unsweetened. Or, you can make your own homemade almond butter.
  • Frozen pineapple: Frozen pineapple adds body and thickness to this puree. The flavor is sweet but neutral enough that it’s not detectable in the final smoothie. If you have ripe pineapple, substitute a frozen banana.
  • Banana: This smoothie requires a room-temperature banana, so you don’t have to worry about freezing the banana first.
  • Milk of choice: Use dairy milk or non-dairy. Oat milk is my plant milk of choice, but of course, almond milk would be natural here as well.
  • Cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom or cloves: These spices evoke the flavors of masala chai or a chai latte.
  • Vanilla extract: Vanilla draws out the spiced flavor, but can be omitted if desired.
  • Ice: Ice brings a fluffy, frothy body to the smoothie.

A Note on Serving Size

Blend it up, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the sweet, cozy-spiced flavor. The size is a bit smaller than many of my smoothies, so you could likely polish it off yourself! Or make 2 small smoothies if you want to store one for later.

Smoothie Storage

Can you make smoothies in advance? Yes! This almond butter smoothie is best after 1 day in the refrigerator, so you can blend it up and enjoy later. You can get by with 2 days of storage; just make sure to shake it before serving, as it will separate naturally when refrigerated.

A Few Protein Adders

Want to add more protein to this almond butter smoothie? This is helpful if you’re planning to drink it as a meal replacement, since it makes the drink more filling. Here are a few ideas:

  • Chia seeds: Add plant-based protein and fiber with chia seeds. A serving of 2 tablespoons of chia seeds adds 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber to the mix.
  • Vanilla protein powder: I use a protein powder that has natural ingredients and a flavor that’s not too artificial.

More Smoothies With Almond Butter

You can add almond butter to many different smoothies to add protein and a nutty depth in flavor. It’s often a better choice than peanut butter, which can have a stronger peanut flavor.

Keep in mind: adding nut butter slightly dulls a smoothie’s color, and sometimes it can compete with the purity of the fruity flavors. But it’s fun to experiment with! Here are a few more smoothies where 1 to 2 tablespoons of almond butter works well:

How to Make French Press Iced Coffee https://www.acouplecooks.com/french-press-iced-coffee/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/french-press-iced-coffee/#comments Sat, 11 Apr 2026 18:37:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=109817 Learn how to make French press iced coffee in minutes with this easy method! It’s strong, smooth, and better than anything from the drive-through.

French Press Iced Coffee

Got a French press? Let’s make French press iced coffee! This coffee maker is a genius tool for making various types of coffee.

You might generally think of it for hot coffee, but the French press is great for cold coffee, too. I often use it for cold brew, but it works for iced coffee, or brewed coffee that’s served over ice and often diluted with milk.

5 Star Reader Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This ended up tasting just like an iced americano from the coffee shop to me! Very tasty, thanks for the recipe!” -Ollie

Two Ways to Use Your French Press for Iced Coffee

The French press is a small pitcher with a plunger that’s used to brew coffee. Despite the name, the French press was first patented by Italians in the 1920s. (A simpler version existed in France before then, just without official patents.) It’s most often used for hot coffee, but the French press also makes tea, cold brew, espresso, and more.

There are two main methods you can use for French press iced coffee: cold brew or brewed coffee. Many coffee shops use cold brew for serving an iced coffee, though traditionally, an iced coffee is made with hot brewed coffee. Here are the pros and cons for each:

  • Method 1: Cold brew iced coffee: Make French press cold brew, and it makes a big pitcher of 5 servings, so you can sip on it all week. The flavor is great and even smoother than with hot coffee. The con? You have to wait 24 hours.
  • Method 2: Brewed iced coffee: You can make French press iced coffee with strong coffee, then pour it over ice. It also has great flavor and only takes 10 minutes to make. The con? It makes only 2 servings at once, so you’ll need to make it to order.

Choosing Your Coffee

The best coffee for an iced coffee is dark roast coffee. I love light and medium roast pour-over coffee, but find the bitter flavor of a dark roast is what I expect in an iced coffee. Starbucks and Intelligentsia have nice dark roast options available.

Tools You’ll Need

It starts with a French press! Here’s what you may need to make this iced coffee, as most of these are entirely optional:

  • French press coffee maker: I use a Bodum 34-ounce (1 liter) French Press. The Bodum brand has been making this coffee tool since the 1940s.
  • Coffee grinder (optional): You can use any type of coffee grinder, and it’s optional if you have pre-ground coffee. An electric burr grinder is most consistent for a medium grind.
  • Filtered water (optional): Filtered water has the best flavor for coffee!
  • Food scale (optional): You can use a digital food scale to weigh out the coffee and water, or just use the ratio of 1 cup grounds to 4 cups water.
  • Electric kettle (optional): To easily measure the temperature of water, you can use an electric kettle.

How to Make French Press Iced Coffee

If you want to use cold brew as the basis of your French press iced coffee, see my recipe for French press cold brew. Otherwise, here’s how to do this quick and easy method. You’ll make double-strength French press coffee, then pour it over ice, which dilutes it. This method uses half the water as the normal method. Here’s what to do:

  1. Grind the coffee. Grind 75 grams of coffee beans to a medium grind using a coffee grinder. That’s about 1 cup.
  2. Heat the water. Heat 2 cups of water to hot but not boiling (200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit) using an electric kettle. Or, bring it to a boil on the stovetop and then let it sit for a minute to cool in temperature.
  3. Add coffee grounds. Add the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot.
  4. Let coffee bloom for 1 minute. Add hot water to the height of the coffee and stir with a spoon. Set a timer and wait for 1 minute.
  5. Add water and brew 4 minutes. Fill the French press to the top (just below the spout) and stir again. Set a timer and wait for 4 minutes.
  6. Plunge. Place the lid on the French press and slowly press the plunger all the way down.
  7. Serve. Fill two tall glasses with ice. Pour the hot coffee over the ice. (About half the ice should melt.) Add additional ice if necessary.

Ways To Serve Iced Coffee

If you like, you can serve iced coffee with a splash of milk and sweetener! Here are my top choices for this drink:

  • 2% milk: A splash of milk adds just the right richness.
  • Oat milk: Oat milk is a great dairy-free option with good creaminess and flavor. You can also try almond milk or cashew milk, but oat milk is my top choice for coffee drinks.
  • Maple syrup: Maple syrup adds just the right hint of sweetness.
  • Vanilla syrup: Use homemade vanilla syrup to make vanilla iced coffee.
  • Other sweeteners: You can use other sweeteners like honey, agave nectar, or simple syrup.
French press iced coffee

Storage

French press iced coffee is best consumed immediately, as the flavor degrades quickly once brewed. If you want a make-ahead option, I’d recommend making French press cold brew instead: it keeps in the fridge for up to two weeks.

The French press is so versatile. It’s one of my top coffee-making methods! Here are my top drinks to make in the French press:

Ingredients

  • 75 grams dark roast coffee, about 1 cup ground coffee*
  • 2 cups water (475 grams)
  • 8-cup / 34-ounce (1 liter) French Press

Instructions

  1. Grind the coffee. Grind the coffee beans to a medium grind using a coffee grinder. (A burr grinder is most consistent, but not required.) The size of the grind is important. If it’s too fine, it can create sediment. If it’s too coarse, it’s not flavorful enough.
  2. Heat the water. Heat the water to hot but not boiling (200 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit) using an electric kettle, or bring it to a boil on the stovetop and then let it sit for 1 minute to decrease in temperature.
